Another Word about Gentrification from the Capitol
You got this one right Push.back.us. Of course, it's not that blacks have disappeared, but in reality they've lost power - thanks to the systemic degradation that is now pervading many black inner-cities (Atlanta immediately comes to mind, as well).
On a recent visit, some of my worst fears were affirmed as not only there are many black faces, but there are many hispanic faces - both seem to be sparring for the crumbs. The again having the statute of Dr. MLK in the Capital Mall and there are still being black culture (food and stuff) that the gentrifiers love to feast on, the black visual will continue.
Moreover, who has time to protest when the need for food and shelter have virtually displaced liberation-thinking folk?
The system is working - at least for the the gentrifiers. Now make no mistake, there are blacks who are doing well in DC, but apparently not enough to change much - at this time. Plus the sports circuit do offer a diversion - but then too, but mostly only the gentrifiers can afford to see them in person if you can't get a minimum wage job at the venues. Last, but not least, once again, D.C. is a microsym of what many (we all) are experiencing throughout America.
